Developing smart link box:
The Smart Link Box (Intelligent Link Box) is an advanced version of a standard link box designed to monitor and collect real-time intelligence on its own performance and detect Partial Discharge (PD) in the High Voltage (HV) Power Transmission Cable System. It transmits this data to a command center overseeing HV underground power cables. Mechanically and electrically connected to the sheath layer, the Smart Link Box detects high-frequency impulses caused by PD in the insulation layer (XLPE). A high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) inside the Link Box captures these impulses, enabling PD detection and monitoring.
The system features a Main Control Unit (MCU) that gathers sensor data and transmits it via GSM or fiber optic (F/O) network to a SCADA system. Users can set alert thresholds,
triggering SMS or email notifications for maintenance actions.
In addition to PD detection, the Smart Link Box incorporates sensors for sheath bonding
system faults, internal failures, temperature & humidity monitoring, water intrusion
detection, and lid status monitoring. This comprehensive intelligence-gathering makes it a smart product that aids in preventive maintenance and operational reliability of HV power Systems.
Case Study:
During a high-voltage electrical fault that originated from the RSS (Receiving Substation) or GIS (Gas Insulated Substation), a sudden surge of fault current traveled through the transmission network. However, the Sheath Voltage Limiter (SVL) within the Peace Power Link Box effectively protected the entire transmission line. The SVL rapidly diverted the excessive voltage surge to the ground, preventing overvoltage stress on the cable sheath and insulation. By doing so, it mitigated potential damage to the HV power transmission cable system, ensuring uninterrupted power flow and preserving the integrity of the network.
